Based on the types of rocks, this book has been divided into three parts. PART 1 describes large scale structures, textures, microstructures and petrographic description of common igneous rocks. The chapter on norm and Nlggli value calculation embodies step-by-step rules for determination of normative composition of the igneous rocks and calculation of Niggli values and other indices. Modal analysis demonstrates the procedure of determination of modal composition of the rocks. Graphic plot of petrochemistry data in form of various diagrams has also been included. PART II deals with the study of texture, and petrographic description of common metamorphic rocks and procedures of graphic construction of ACF, AKF and AFM diagrams. PART III comprises six chapters. Chapter on texture includes numerical examples on computation of sphericity and roundness values. Sedimentary structures are illustrated by diagrams with notes on their mode of formation and utility. Different schemes of classification of sedimentary rocks and aggregates including petrography of common sedimentary rocks have been given. Chapter on grain size analysis describes the laboratory techniques employed In size study of sedimentary particles Including computation of size statistics by both graphical and moment methods. Palaeocurrent analysis deals with tilt correction, construction of rose diagrams, computation of vector mean and determination of its statistical significance Including comparison of palaeocurrent populations. The chapter on heavy mineral analysis Includes laboratory procedures of separation of heavy minerals, their Identification and graphic representation. The book aims to serve as a complete practical manual and text for both undergraduate and post graduate students of geology.
