The health, welfare, comfort and productivity of nations are interwoven with new developments in both the refrigeration and air-conditioning fields. Refrigeration is essential for the preservation of foods, the production and safe storage of medicines, and the like. Equally important, through refrigeration better controls of industrial processes are possible. Dimensional accuracy is improved, new materials may be developed and processed, and other production processes may be increased. As significant and as complex as this range of applications may be, the major units which together constitute refrigeration or an air-conditioning system all depend on fundamental scientific principles. It is the objective of this instructional material to present these basic principles.
