Skin-irritant and sensitizing plants can pose a serious, and sometimes incapacitating problem to the cutaneous health of the community. Because of the confusing nomenclature of plants, particularly their vernacular names, and the paucity of present information regarding the dermatoses they can produce, considerable difficulty has been experienced in the correct aetiologtcal diagnosis and elimination of the cause in the course of treatment. To facilitate the task of the practising dermatologist who is confronted with this problem, it is necessary make available to him botanical characteristics of the offending plants to enable him to recognize them, their distribution in the country, their chemical constituents and information on the different dermatoses they produce. The present work describes all these factors and also the folklore connected with these plants. The medicinal aspects, of plants are beyond the scope of the present study.
