Mollusks are the largest group of animals after insects, and soon after work was begun on them, it became evident that they could not be treated adequately within the confines of a single volume. Hence the work has been divided into two volumes: Mollusca I and Mollusca II. The present volume, Mollusca I, disposes of four classes of mollusks, leaving three for Mollusca II. This volume was begun in 1958 and, in general, consideration of the literature ceases with the writing of any particular topic, although later titles appear in the bibliographies. Progress would be greatly retarded if one had constantly to go back and insert later findings. This was done only in case of important new facts. It appears necessary to state once more that these volumes are compiled from the literature. Most of the illustrations have been reproduced by photography from the original articles.
