Details
The third edition of Volume 5 now constitutes Part 1 of STATISTICAL PHYSICS. Part 2 beginswith an extensive discussion of the theory of quantum liquids, which was dealt with briefly in the second edition, and goes on to give a detailed treatment of new material arising from the very rapid development of the subject in the past 20 years. A detailed treat- ment of Green's function methods and diagram techniques is given. The use of Green's functions greatly simplifies the theory of electromagnetic fluctuations in material media (previously dis- cussed in Volume 8), and electromagnetic and hydrodynamic fluctuations are now discussed in the same volume, which accounts for its position as Volume 9 in the COURSE. It has been written for postgraduate students in theoretical physics, but owing to its clarity of exposition much of it could be read and understood by final-year undergraduates in theoretical physics, physics and also chemistry.
