    Details

This book deals with system of linear equations and their solutions by means of elementary row operations on matrices, vector spaces, subspaces, bases and dimensions, linear transformations, their algebra, their representation by matrices as well as isomorphism, linear functional and dual spaces, inner products, Jordan canonical forms, diagonalizable, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, Jordan form, quadratic forms, etc. This approach equips students with the necessary skills and problem-solving strategies in an abstract setting that allows for a greater understanding and appreciation of the numerous applications of the subject.

    Salient Features

    • Fundamental ideas of linear algebra are introduced within the first seven lectures; later generalizations of these concepts appear as natural extensions of familiar ideas.
    • Focus on visualization of concepts throughout the book.
    • A modern view of matrix multiplication is presented; definitions and proofs focus on the columns of a matrix rather than on the matrix entries.
    • Numerical notes give a realistic flavor to the text; students are reminded frequently of issues that arise in the real-life use of linear algebra.
    • Each major concept in the course is given a geometric interpretation because many students learn better when they can visualize an idea.
    • New coverage of the singular value decomposition has been added to the text.
