Table of Content Sample Pages

There are millions of organic compounds. In early days of organic chemistry each new compound was given an individual name based on the source, some property or other trivial reasons. With the rapid growth of organic chemistry, the number of compounds increased rapidly. It became impossible to give common names to such a large number of compounds. The principal source of modern chemical nomenclature is the body of rules issued by the Commission on the nomenclature of organic chemistry of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

Product Description

    Details

The main purpose of presenting this book is to give systematic names for compounds derived from their structural formula by applying IUPAC name to explicit or implied relationship to the structure of the compound, in order that the reader or listener can easily deduce the structure and identify the name of compounds. It is important to recognize that the rules of systematic nomenclature need not necessarily lead to a unique name for each compound, but must always lead to an unambiguous one. This requires a system of principles and rules, the application of which may give rise to a systematic nomenclature. The book has been divided into eleven chapters covering all important classes of organic compounds such as Introduction, Nomenclature rules, Radicals, Hydrocarbons, Halogen derivatives, Heterocyclic compounds, Oxygen containing compounds, Carboxylic acids and derivatives, Nitrogen containing compounds, and Nomenclature of compounds. The rules, punctuation, priority, radicals and thousands of examples are to be taken with all precautions.
