Instrumentation has advanced markedly, and the modem uses of light microscopy are amazing. With the help of various fluorescent dye molecules, fluorescence microscopy has become a remarkable research aid. The dyes evoke auto fluorescence of cells and tiny organisms. Thus, much has been learned about the abundance of bacteria and protists in both marine and inland waters. Further study of their roles in nutrient cycles led to the microbial loop concept, which must be included in any modem treatment of limnology or oceanography. This has changed and now the downward effects of upper trophic levels on those below them is emphasized; the words trophic cascade and cascading effects are new and represent another important concept in aquatic studies.
