The book emphasizes the essential concepts pertaining to the planning, design, construction and maintenance of bridges. Examples with detailed computations have been included for the basic types of bridges in order to illustrate the application of code provisions. Salient points of other types have been indicated. The text contains many useful ideas drawn from the author's experience, observations and his previous publications. Additional references are given at the end of each chapter with a view to encourage the reader in his further reading.
The book is primarily intended as a textbook for a two-semester course in Bridge Engineering at the University level and as a guide to the bridge engineer in the early part of his/her professional career. It would also serve as a reference material for the practising engineer.

| About the Author | David Johnson Victor is former Professor of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. He received his BE degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Madras, in 1953 and his MTech degree in Structural Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in 1958. He earned his PhD degree in 1966 from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas, USA, where he was a University Fellowship Holder during 1965-66. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering (India, and a Life Member of the Indian Roads Congress. Prior to his retirement from service, his professional affiliations included: Fellow, American Society of Civil Engineering; and Member, Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia. Besides his early experience in State Highway Department, he has been active in teaching, research and consultancy for over 45 years. He served on invitation as Professor at Toyohashi University of technology, Toyohashi, Japan during 1987-88. Prof. Victor is the author of four textbooks and over 75 papers published in international and national journals and conference proceedings. For his research papers, he has been awarded the Railway Board Gold Medal in 1975, the EP Nicolaides prize in 1977 and the Production Engineering Division Medal for 1991-92 by the Institution of Engineering (India) and a Commendation Certificate in 1975 by the India Roads Congress. He has participated in many International Conferences, and has delivered invited Lectures at several forums in India and Abroad. |
