Authors have used the working definition of medical humanities as “an amalgamation of medical sciences with arts, viz. philosophy, sociology, psychology, history, literature, theatre and arts, empathy, culture, and more importantly with ethics, communication, and professionalism in medical context, with interdisciplinary interaction and application of clinical skills with soft skills for improving patient care outcomes”. The book deals with teaching medical humanities in undergraduate curriculum and their assessment and should serve as a useful resource for teaching many of the AETCOM competencies.

| About the Author | Rajiv Mahajan MD (Pharmacology), PhD (Health Professions Education),Dip Clin Res, FIMSA,ACME,CMCL-FAIMER Fellow2016 is Principal, Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (AIMSR), Bathinda. He is Fellow of International Medical Scientists Academy. He has special interest in health professions education, medical humanities, ethics and professionalism, and has conducted various training programs and workshops for the faculty and students in these areas. He did his Advance Course in Medical Education (ACME) in 2014 and is a fellow of Foundation for Advancement in International Medical Education and Research (CMCL-FAIMER). During his FAIMER fellowship, he developed a module for interns in medical ethics (MIME) which has now been adopted as training course for interns by various universities. He has written 3 books, 20 chapters, and over 125 papers. He is editor-in-chief of two indexed journals International Journal of Applied and Basic Medical Research, and Adesh University Journal of Medical Sciences and Research. He is former Dean Academics, AIMSR; former Dean (Postgraduate Studies and Research), former Dean (Students Welfare and Youth Affairs), Adesh University, Bathinda; and currently its Dean (Academic Affairs). He was awarded his PhD in health professions education for his research work in the field of professional identity formation of medical educators. Tejinder Singh MD (Pediatrics), MSc (HPE), FAMS, FIAP, FIMSA, FAIMER Fellow (USA), IFME is NAMS Emeritus Professor of Medical Education, Emeritus Professor, Department of Pediatrics and Professor and Chair, Center for Health Professions Education, Adesh University, Bathinda. He has previously served as Principal (Acting) and Dean, Professor and Head, Departments of Pediatrics and Medical Education, and Convener, MCI Nodal Center for Faculty Development, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana. He is Founder Director, CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute; National Convener and National Consultant for Advanced Course in Medical Education run by Medical Council of India; Member, Expert Group for the new Competency-based Curriculum, and Curriculum Implementation Support Program. He is recipient of many awards and prizes including Dr BC Roy National Award for Eminent Medical Teacher, National Board of Examinations Award for Eminent NBE Alumnus, Indian Medical Association Medical Education and Research Award for Young Graduates, Atma Ram Sarogi Gold Medal, and IGNOU Gold Medal. He has also delivered many orations and has been conferred fellowships by National Academy of Medical Sciences, Indian Academy of Pediatrics, International Medical Sciences Academy, Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (USA), and an international fellowship in Medical Education (Netherlands). He has written 4 books, 75 book chapters and over 310 papers. Fondly called TS by his colleagues and students, he has conducted numerous training programs over last 30 years on basic education methods, distance education, student mentoring and student assessment in India and abroad. |
